You can pay for just one month of ChatGPT Plus, then cancel the renewal. The U.S. price is $20 before applicable tax. For an ordinary paid month, cancellation leaves access in place until the billing period ends. Free promotions have different rules, so do not apply the cancel-on-day-one approach to an offer without reading its terms.
OpenAI does not advertise a standing public Plus trial for everyone. Some users qualify for targeted or group offers. The options below were checked on October 30, 2026, including the U.S. student offer with an October 31 claim deadline. Recheck eligibility and the checkout price before subscribing.
Still deciding whether Plus is worth paying for at all? Our decision guide to ChatGPT Plus by work pattern covers that. This page is about getting ChatGPT for 1 month, cheaply, with no surprise renewal waiting at the end.
How to Pay for 1 Month of ChatGPT Plus Only
Plus is $20 a month in the U.S., billed monthly. OpenAI’s cancellation article says canceling stops future renewals, while paid features stay on until the current billing period ends. That rule is what makes a clean one-month purchase possible. Here’s the sequence on the web:
Subscribe at chatgpt.com rather than inside the iPhone or Android app. Web subscriptions are billed and canceled by OpenAI. App purchases are billed by Apple or Google, and some promotions refuse app-store billing entirely.
Pay for the month. Outside the U.S., the price will likely be in your local currency, since OpenAI bills in about 70 currencies with localized pricing.
Go straight back to your settings. Open the account menu, choose Settings, then Billing, and select the Cancel plan button in the Cancel plan section. OpenAI’s promotions article calls the same area Subscription, so look for whichever label your account shows.
Keep using Plus. Your access continues through the end of the month you paid for, then the account drops back to Free.
Reopen the billing section a day later and confirm the plan no longer shows an upcoming renewal.
If you’d rather not cancel on day one, OpenAI’s cancellation article sets the deadline: at least 24 hours before your next billing date, which the Billing page shows as “Your plan auto-renews on” followed by the date. Any later and the next month’s charge may already have gone through.

Canceling Plus Bought Through the App Store or Google Play
Buying Plus inside the ChatGPT app works for one month too, but Apple or Google holds the subscription, so the cancel button lives in their settings, not in ChatGPT. OpenAI’s promotions help article says you have to cancel on the platform where the subscription started, and that you can’t cancel through the ChatGPT mobile app. Pay in the app, then cancel right away using the path in OpenAI’s cancellation article:
On an iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions, pick ChatGPT and tap Cancel Subscription. No cancel option, just an expiration date? Apple’s support page says that means it’s already canceled.
On Android, open the Google Play Store app, go to Subscriptions, pick ChatGPT, tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts. Google’s Play help page confirms you keep access for the time you’ve already paid for.
Deleting the app doesn’t cancel the subscription, as OpenAI and Google both point out. And because the web and app-store billing systems are separate, it’s possible to pay twice: OpenAI’s promotions article lists a duplicate subscription as one reason the Cancel button can go missing. Check both before you buy.
Is There a ChatGPT Plus Free Trial Right Now?
Not a public one. OpenAI’s Plus help article describes the plan as $20 billed monthly and doesn’t mention a trial, and the pricing page shows no trial for individual users. If an article promises a ChatGPT Plus free trial that works for anyone, it’s either out of date or describing something narrower.
Targeted offers have appeared for some accounts, but news reports do not establish who can claim one today. OpenAI’s promotion terms say eligibility varies by campaign. Treat an offer as real for you only when it appears through an official account or partner flow and the terms match at activation.
Check the upgrade screen or an official offer link. If no promotion appears, do not assume a code from another person will work. Confirm the price, duration, renewal date and cancellation effect before accepting. If the expected discount is missing at checkout, stop and contact support or the issuing partner.
A retention offer can leave a subscription active. After accepting one, inspect the billing status again and record the next charge date. Some free promotions end immediately when canceled; others keep only the current promotional month. Follow that offer’s exact terms.
How to Get ChatGPT Plus Free: Official 2026 Offers
These official programs have different eligibility and renewal rules. This is a dated selection, not a guarantee that every available partner offer is listed.

One Year of ChatGPT Plus Free for Transitioning Servicemembers
OpenAI announced this offer on November 10, 2025, aimed at people moving from the military into civilian jobs. Its current terms cover verified U.S. military veterans and retirees who transitioned from active duty within the past 12 months, plus active service members who will transition within the next 12 months. On verification, the terms are blunt: “Verification through ID.me is required.” Start at chatgpt.com/veterans-claim. Verify through ID.me, allow the result to be shared, then claim on the intended personal account. Enter your service end date if requested.
The free year runs from the day you claim it, and the terms are specific about what happens next:
It renews automatically at the standard Plus monthly rate unless you cancel before your first billing date after the promotion.
You can cancel anytime, but Plus access may end immediately and the offer can’t be reinstated, so don’t cancel early “to be safe.”
Web Plus subscribers get the free year applied directly. App Store and Google Play subscribers have to cancel in the store first, then claim on chatgpt.com once that subscription is no longer active.
It’s one per eligible subscriber, and each ID.me identity can be linked to only one ChatGPT account at a time. It needs a personal account (accounts belonging to an Enterprise workspace cannot redeem it, even from a personal workspace) and can’t be combined with other promotions.
OpenAI hasn’t published an end date for the program. Set a calendar reminder two weeks before the one-year mark to decide whether to keep paying.

Malta’s AI for All Course Comes With a Year of Plus
In May 2026, OpenAI and Malta’s government announced a free year of ChatGPT Plus for Maltese citizens who complete an AI literacy course from Malta’s “AI for All” initiative, developed by the University of Malta. The Malta Digital Innovation Authority handles distribution, and the program is expanding in phases to residents and citizens abroad. OpenAI’s announcement doesn’t give a redemption deadline. If you’re eligible, start with the course, not with ChatGPT’s upgrade screen.
Free Workspaces for Teachers and Academic Researchers
Verified U.S. K–12 teachers and eligible school staff can use ChatGPT for Teachers free through June 2028. That is a separate educator workspace, not personal Plus.
The Academic Researchers program provides approved teams with up to five complimentary seats for 12 months. New applications are currently closed. New signups join an informational waitlist, which does not submit an application or guarantee access.
Student Offer Deadline and the Expired India Go Deal
OpenAI’s Back to School terms set October 31, 2026 as the claim deadline for eligible full-time or part-time students at U.S. colleges and graduate schools. That deadline is still ahead as of this guide’s October 30 check. Verify through SheerID while signed in to the account that should receive the offer.
The offer provides four free monthly billing periods, then renews at $20 a month unless canceled. A valid payment method is required. Eligible existing web-billed monthly Plus subscribers can claim; store-billed subscriptions are not supported while they remain store-billed. Canceling preserves the current monthly period but forfeits remaining promotional months. After October 31, check the official page for a documented extension or replacement rather than assuming one.
The biggest “12 months free” headline of the past year wasn’t Plus at all. In November 2025, OpenAI gave eligible users in India 12 months of ChatGPT Go at no cost. Go is OpenAI’s cheaper tier ($8 a month in the U.S.), not Plus, and the release notes now say the promotion ended on January 21, 2026. People who claimed it before then may still be inside their free year, but nobody new can sign up.
So if you see a page promising “ChatGPT Plus 12 months free” to anyone who signs up, it’s describing one of the narrow programs above, an expired promotion, or something unofficial.
ChatGPT Plus Discounts: Partner Codes, Go and Local Prices
There is no annual Plus discount: OpenAI’s Plus guide says annual billing and prepaying several months are not supported. Other savings depend on an eligible promotion, a lower-cost plan, local pricing or an organization’s arrangement.
Partner codes are the first. OpenAI’s promotions article describes codes that partners hand out, each redeemed through a unique link. A code might be a free trial, a reduced price or a one-time promotional rate, and some are limited to people who’ve never had Plus. There’s a limit of one per subscriber, and codes can’t be transferred or sold. Confirm the discounted price on the checkout screen before you pay, because most codes renew at the standard Plus rate when they run out.
The second door is a cheaper plan. Go costs $8 a month in the U.S. and adds more uploads, image creation and memory over Free. It does not include the Sol reasoning levels available on Plus; Go has its own Luna-powered Think option. Its ChatGPT Work access is limited to the desktop app, according to OpenAI’s pricing page (checked October 30, 2026), and it shows ads in several countries.
Third, local pricing. Plus and Go are localized in some markets, so checkout in your currency may come in lower or higher than the U.S. figure. Apple and Google set their own in-app prices in your currency, so compare those with the web price too.
Fourth, organizations. Business costs $20 per user per month billed annually or $25 monthly, with a minimum of two paid seats, and OpenAI’s pricing page says nonprofits can get up to 75% off Business or Enterprise through OpenAI for Nonprofits. Neither is a personal Plus discount. For an eligible charity, though, a discounted Business workspace can cost less per person than separate Plus plans, with admin controls included.
Stop a Surprise Renewal Charge Before It Hits Your Card
Here’s how to avoid the usual surprise charges:
Cancel at least 24 hours before your billing date. Later than that and the next month may already be charged.
Cancel on the platform where you subscribed. Web plans cancel in ChatGPT’s settings, app-store plans in Apple’s or Google’s.
For a paid month, cancel on day one. For a free promotion, don’t: OpenAI says free promotions may end immediately when canceled, so set a reminder a few days before the free period ends instead.
A declined card isn’t a cancellation. OpenAI’s promotions article warns that failed payments may be retried later, and a retry can go through.
Deleting your account cancels subscriptions billed directly by OpenAI. If Apple or Google billed you, cancel and verify the store subscription before deleting the account. It’s also a drastic way to stop a $20 charge. Our guide to deleting a ChatGPT account covers what you lose, and export your chats first if you want them.
Locked out of the email you signed up with? For subscriptions billed by OpenAI, support asks for the account or billing email plus two accepted billing details. The last four card digits and the most recent charge date are two options; check the current cancellation guide for the full list. Never send the full card number.
Don’t plan around a refund. OpenAI’s cancellation article says canceling doesn’t refund past charges automatically. Refund requests for web and Google Play purchases go to OpenAI Support, Apple purchases go to Apple, and eligibility sits in a separate refund article. That makes the 24-hour rule the one to remember.

Choose one concrete project before paying. You can set up preferences on Free first, then use the paid month to compare real results. Our ChatGPT setup guide covers the settings.
Why Shared Accounts and Resold Plus Logins Backfire
You’ll find sellers offering cheap “shared” Plus seats or resold codes. Skip them. OpenAI’s terms of use say you may not make your credentials or account available to others outside your organization, and they hold you responsible for everything done with your login. OpenAI also says it may revoke codes or accounts over suspected misuse. The practical risk is worse than the policy one. A shared login means strangers can read your chat history, your memory and any files you uploaded, and the account can vanish halfway through the project you bought it for.
Put the renewal date in your calendar the minute you subscribe, then decide on day 25 whether month two is worth $20.
ChatGPT 1 Month Questions: Trials, Students and Cancellation
Can I get 1 month of ChatGPT Plus for free?
Only when an eligible offer provides it. OpenAI’s public Plus plan does not include a standing trial for everyone. Read the specific offer’s price, duration, renewal and cancellation rules before claiming.
Is there a ChatGPT Plus discount for students?
The 2026 Back to School offer has an October 31 claim deadline and provides four free monthly periods to eligible verified U.S. students. It is a promotion, not a permanent student price. Check the current official terms before paying.
Can I get ChatGPT Plus 12 months free?
Yes, if you’re a verified U.S. service member within 12 months of leaving active duty, a veteran or retiree who left in the past 12 months, or a Maltese citizen who finishes the AI for All course. India’s 12 free months were for Go, not Plus, and that promotion ended January 21, 2026.
Do I lose ChatGPT Plus access right after canceling?
An ordinary paid cancellation keeps access until the current billing period ends. A refund can end that access earlier, and promotions have their own cancellation rules. Check the confirmation on the platform that billed you.
